Chiloe

Visiting Chile over the past few years and getting down to the South when we can, I had always heard about the island chain just south of Puerto Montt called Chiloe. The island in many ways is a sort of magical destination: The geography, the ocean, bays, islands, storms, wooden ship building culture, the native peoples connections to the rain forest and waters, the unique southern wooden architecture, vast wetlands teeming with shorebirds. We finally got down there in October of 2022 to participate in Castro Abierto, a patrimony, architecture, and cultural festival held annually and put on by Fundacion Aldea. We only got to see a small portion of the islands and the culture that is held tightly through its land and waters. Much is left to be seen and experienced.
