HOLGA BAJA

Desert scenery of Baja California with a Holga camera. Made during surf explorations of the early 2000’s.

I found the desert and coastal scenes of Baja California perfectly suited to be documented with the cheap plastic Holga film camera. The Holga is famous for capturing soft square images with a natural vignette that occurs due to the cameras simple and cheap construction. No doubt the precursor to Instagram, the Holga look used to only be accessible with some knowledge of film and a desire to experiment. No longer of course, today everybody has a Holga or a Diana in their pocket with the numerous filters they can apply to the thousands of images they take with their smartphones.
