Volcanoes of Chile
Traveling up Highway 395 on the east side of the Sierra Nevada range of California as kids, we always had our heads stuck to the car window as we passed the strange red rock and pumice mounds that were rolling past us. From those early days on up until now, I have always been intrigued by the volcanic landscapes that give proof to our earth’s volcanic history. Chile straddles the Ring of Fire for some 4,000 miles (6,400kms), so its no wonder that many volcanoes can be found there. Many of those volcanoes are still active, including the Calbuco Volcano located in the Lakes region, which erupted spectacularly in 2015. To travel up and down the narrow country from the deserts of the Atacama to the frozen peaks of Patagonia to study, document, and photograph the many volcanoes, would be a wonderful adventure. Thus far I have been fortunate enough to explore a few of the larger and more well known cones, such as Osorno and Llaima. These are images from those trips in Chile, where often enough I found myself walking over the black earth, on the beaches, on the sides of volcanoes, and wherever volcanic ash has fallen.
